El Bolson to Lago Puelo By Bus
Local buses connect El Bolsón and Lago Puelo, but they don’t run constantly; you’ll need to check the schedules for the season when you visit the region. There are two options for making the trip by bus: a local bus that makes various stops throughout both towns, or a medium-distance bus that takes you to and drops you off at the bus stations in El Bolson and Lago Puelo.
El Bolson to Lago Puelo By Remis
A reasonable option for a one-way or round trip if you don’t have a car and don’t want to work around bus schedules. Worth arranging through your accommodation in El Bolsón, which will usually have a recommended local driver.

Morning: If you’re traveling by car or local bus, you can go straight to the lake’s entrance and hike a few of the trails in Lago Puelo National Park, taking advantage of the lighter crowds and the cool morning weather in Patagonia.
Midday: Spend a few hours at the lake — swimming in summer, or a short walk through the valdivian forest trails if the weather isn’t right for the water. El Desemboque, where the Río Azul meets the lake, is an easy, popular stop.
Afternoon: A boat ride on Lake Puelo is a great way to spend the afternoon if you can afford it. But if you’d rather do something more active and free, there are surely several trails left for you to explore.
Return: If you’re returning by bus, be sure to arrive at the bus stop or terminal about 15 minutes early, since buses usually leave on time and they don’t wait for long.
Should You Stay Overnight in Lago Puelo Instead?
If you have the time and the budget, definitely! Lago Puelo is a beautiful town with some really interesting places to stay and eat. It’s absolutely worth spending a few days there.
Lagp Puelo is an even smaller town than El Bolsón, and if you stay there, you can head to the national park and the lake first thing in the morning—even on foot. You don’t have to worry about bus schedules or driving back. If you don’t have a car, this is a great option, since the entrance to Lago Puelo National Park is just outside the town and you can easily walk there, as well as to the vast majority of the trailheads.
Combining Lago Puelo With Other Day Trips
If you have a car, it’s possible to combine a shorter visit to Lago Puelo with a stop in El Hoyo on the same day, since both are within a similar distance of El Bolsón in different directions. This works better if you keep the Lago Puelo portion to a half-day (one trail plus swimming) rather than trying to do everything the park offers.
Practical Tips
- Bring cash for the park entrance fee and for Lago Puelo town, you can almost always use a credit card or your phone to pay, but there are times where the service might not be available. Bring some cash just to be sure.
- If relying on the bus, confirm the return schedule before you leave El Bolsón — don’t assume you can catch a bus back whenever you’re ready.
- Summer weekends can get busy at the main beach access points; arriving earlier in the day helps.
